059 – Feb 28 – Om
ladybugrock posted a photo: On Sunday, I am starting on a new adventure (because 365 days of self-portraits and marathon training are not enough of an adventure for me). I’m starting a yoga program called 40 Days to a Personal Revolution. The program consists of meditating twice per day and attending yoga practice 6 days per week. Once a week, there’s a meeting with the other people who are also doing the program where we talk about the laws of transformation and the themes for the week like presence, vitality, centering, etc. I did this program last year and I benefited from it, but it didn’t really stick. I love yoga. Every time I leave class I feel amazing. But, at the same time, the challenge of it scares me. Its not the physical challenge that scares me; its the spiritual one. It is so much harder to be kind and accepting of yourself and where you are in life than it is to fight and struggle against it. Admitting frailty can be more difficult than portraying strength. Struggling against chaos is easier than accepting where you are in life. I think that’s why I stopped my yoga practice. I didn’t have the courage to allow myself to be present and centered in my life. But, knowing that makes coming back that much sweeter. I can truly see why I need this. I’m looking forward to these next 40 days. I feel like this program dovetails with my self-portrait project. It also comes at the right time when I am winding down my marathon training and yearning for something more than just those long, lonely runs. I am grateful for the opportunity to try this again. I hope this time it sticks. This is getting long, but I’ll close by explaining the necklace that I am wearing. My friend Alison (who is also doing the 40 day program) got it for me in Costa Rica last year. Its an "Om" symbol. Om is a small word, but it represents the absolute truth of the universe coalesed into a single sound that represents the union of mind, body, and spirit. Chanting Om at the start and end of each yoga class is one of my favorite things about yoga. I love the intonation and the vibration. Continue reading
