About Jade Yoga In a way, Jade Yoga began long before launching its first purple and blue Harmony yoga mats in 2002. Jade Yoga grew out of Jade Industries, a company that had been making non-slip natural rubber rug pads for area rugs since the early 1970s. For many years, Jade Industries also sold rug pads to select yogis in the area for use as yoga mats. As the story goes, rug mats first attracted the attention of yogis after B.K.S. Iyengar--who was in the U.S. doing a yoga demonstration on an oriental rug--asked a student to remove the rug after slipping repeatedly. Under the rug sat a rug mat, and the first yoga mat was born. Unfortunately, most yoga companies started making mats of cheap, imitation plastic or PVC instead--annoyingly slippery surfaces that were close to useless for many practices. Jade Yoga began in earnest in 2000 after it was approached by a savvy yogi who described the problem with these plastic and PVC mats. As Jade Industries were already making natural rubber rug pads, the company approached the problem from that angle and developed the Harmony, the first natural rubber yoga mat. Located in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, Jade Yoga has a number of products in the pipeline that align with the company's vision of producing high-quality products in an Earth-friendly way.

finding Harmony on a Jade Harmony July 23, 2010 Emdav84 My beloved yogitoes went missing when I left it behind for a weekend at my yoga studio. I like to think that it found a better home, but this left me to do sweaty summer yoga on a cheap dollar-store variety mat that I have been toting around for a few years. Without some sweet stickiness my downward dogs turned into belly flops and I knew I needed an upgrade ASAP!
I did a good deal of review-hunting and decided that the Harmony had the right features in a reasonable price range. I like the color choices, and everyone said that this one was grippy but not too heavy. The mat itself is lovely, there is a soft rubbery smell that is somehow not gross, which I understand will wear off if I leave it unrolled for awhile (booooo!) and it has just the right amount of cushion for my knees.
As far as the stickiness goes, this mat is no comparison to a yogitoes towel. I still found myself budging out of poses millimeter by millimeter. In all fairness, it is July and my studio is well ventilated but not yet air conditioned. By November, when I am not sweating like a cold beer on a hot night, this mat will provide all of the traction that I need. Right now, my palms and feet (and everything else) sweat like I got lost and went to a bikram class instead.
This is a terrific mat, I am happy to have it, but I did end up replacing my yogitoes as well.
I Sweat More Than Anyone I Know July 20, 2010 SadieK (Southern Jersey) I am always the person at they gym soaked through and through with sweat. After spinning, there was actually a sizable puddle underneath my bike. With that said, every time I would do yoga on my old mat, five minutes in I would be slipping and sliding everywhere. It got real frustrating, real fast. After reading reviews I decided to splurge and give this mat a whirl. It has made such a huge difference! I do have to say when I really get sweaty I still slip and slide a bit, but for the most part, I can hold my poses no problem! If you're having problems sliding on sweaty hands and feet, I would definitely recommend this mat.
Great 'hot' yoga mat July 13, 2010 C. Sturgis (ann arbor, MI) This is a great 'hot' yoga mat, it helps a lot with slippage when sweaty, especially in these summer months. I have been using it about 1 month and have absolutely no complaints :-)
Great mat, but not 100% slip-proof July 12, 2010 Maureen Burbury (Massachusetts) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Positive: I purchased the Jade mat because I'd been using a very heavy Manduka mat for years and was sick of lugging it around when I practiced outside my home. The Jade mat is much lighter, yet it's a good sturdy mat (i.e. it's not going to tear apart after only 3 months of use). I also like the fact that it won't be sitting in a landfill for years once I'm done with it.
Negative: The mat claims to be slip-resistant even with perspiration. I found that to be true when I practiced at home, but only because I usually have the windows open and/or a fan going (I sweat a lot). The first time I used the mat in a class, I had to put my yoga rug over the mat because it became slippery after about 30 minutes. I think it's safe to say the mat is fairly slip-resistant if you're someone who sweats lightly or moderately. But if you sweat heavily (or do ashtanga or hot yoga), you should expect to use a rug or towel with it.
I read that it was difficult to get the rubbery smell out of the mat and I've found that to be true as well. I've been using it for about 2 months and it still smells like a dodge ball. The smell is not completely offensive, but I can see how it would be annoying to someone who was sensitive to strong odors.
Love this mat, but it does eventually expire July 7, 2010 Yogini I have had this mat for 3 years and it has been wonderful until just now. Friends had warned me that their Jade Yoga mats had started to disintegrate/break down from the heat in their cars, but I had no such complaints. I have washed it weekly in my washing machine and either hung it to drip dry or sometimes even put it in the dryer, and while I am not sure this was the best thing for my mat, it held up fine. Alas, the end of it's life has finally come. The mat is shedding rubber all over my clothes and starting to develop pits in it and it is time to buy a new one. Would I buy another Jade Mat? Definitely. For me, it has the best cushion and a great stick/non-slip quality. Contrary to other reviews, I don't find it terribly heavy. I don't mind the expense, as long as it serves me well for 3 whole years and puts up with my machine washing!
